a lot of people have asked me if it is strange to be back in michigan after living in places like california and st. louis. it's a good question, i think. somedays i feel like i have lived five lifetimes since i was last here; other times, michigan seems very much as it always was. but because i am quite different, michigan, too, has become a different, lovely place i experience in a new way. and so, to answer that common question, i might have to say that the strangest thing about returning is the reality that i actually came back at all. i had no intention of doing so when i left a few years ago. so, now that i'm here, it seems a bit surreal. once upon a time, it would have been a huge hit to my pride to return to grand rapids (what's more, my parents basement--yeah, no shame). now that i am here, doing what i love and surrounded by people that i think are pretty wonderful, this city, like myself, has taken on new life.
that said, i really want to get back to living in the city. hudsonville is still kind of lame. working on that.
